The recruitment area map of French hospitals and clinics was first designed using Flash 5. It underwent major changes with the release of Flash 6 (aka Flash MX). Now, postal code backgrounds are drawn dynamically when the map is loaded, by querying an Access or mySql table of coordinates. This flexibility answered the need users had of being able to zoom the recruitment area of a selected facility or focus on the destination of the population of a particular area instead. The reasons why patients are sent to a particular hospital are based on complex factors that always go beyond administrative boundaries – i.e. departments or regions. Easy navigation from one region to another therefore had to be made possible, as well as analysing the situation near administrative borders.

Once a facility is selected, the recruitment area map provides the following information :

Foreground data : number of stays per activity group – all disciplines, total clinical medicine, total surgery and 38 detailed disciplines.

Background data : facility recruitment rate and three demographic indicators.

The displayed geographic level is the patients’ home postal code. The map centres depending on the selected facility.

.

Clicking on an area displays an window including indicators such as the distribution of stays by the zone’s inhabitants across the various health facilities. The facility originally selected can then be compared to other facilities.

The pie chart itself is dynamic and indicates the number of stays by the zone’s inhabitants in each facility displayed on the chart.

In the Haute-Normandie application, see for example the Rouen CHU (university hospital).
