Each region is first presented through global statistical maps. Available health services are then viewed through dynamic maps displaying the location of health facilities. Each facility is marked by a dynamic symbol giving access to more detailed information. The uniqueness of this design stems from the possibility of filtering the displayed facilities without having to query the server again. Three query criteria can be accessed by the user from a moveable tool palette that displays the filtered list of facilities – e.g. private clinics providing surgery services. The map and list are updated simultaneously and only the facilities matching the filtering criteria are displayed.

The underlying database is a directory listing health facilities and those services or particular type of equipment – CT scanner, MRI and so on – they are authorised to run. It holds several thousands of records. The source database is updated daily, while the database which supplies information to the maps is refreshed monthly. It is managed in an Informix-Domino environment.

The first series of maps in the application includes 5 general presentation maps – city categories, population, elderly, and so on – and 2 maps displaying the overall availability of health services – available beds and resources per city and per urban area, see opposite.

Available health services are then detailed in dynamic maps that display the location of each facility. Facilities are marked by a symbol that indicates the type of facility – hospital, clinic, and so on – and changes when pointed at by the mouse.

The query window enables users to select displayed facilities according the type of facility and the services provided – clinical medicine, surgery, obstetrics, and so on. Users can also search facilities by name.

Once a query is executed, only the selected facilities are highlighted – the others are “shaded”.

Clicking on a facility displays the relevant detailed information – activity profiles, market shares, and so on.

A simplified display of city types always appears on the base map of the health services map, allowing users to distinguish urban and rural areas.
