Getting started > Enter your data

Type or copy data for USA by states and display them on a map

Creating your own map of USA and exploring your data geographically is amazingly simple. All you need to do is enter the states FIPS codes in the first column of your favourite spreadsheet, along with 1 to 5 columns of data. The order of the states does not matter. Field headers must appear in the first line. Copy the set of data and paste it directly in the specially designed Geoclip. It will automatically recognize your data and offer you all the features of its viewing and browsing interface, as well as a large-size, high-quality printout.

Try it out directly on-line or download a free copy for convenient off-line use: usa_geoclip.zip
(156 k)
.

Follow these instructions :

  click and try !

In this special Geoclip, 5 steps are needed to add new data:
1) Click the "import" button at the top of the control panel or choose "add new variables" in the "foreground data" drop-down list.
The "import panel" dialog box appears.
2) Copy-and paste the set of data in the left frame.
3) Click "parse pasted data".
The data are automatically integrated in the grid on the right.
4) Check that the data was successfully imported. You may still change incorrect values at this stage, if needed.
5) Click "import data".

The dialog box closes and the new variables appear in the "foreground data" drop-down list. You can now map the data you have imported, as foreground data, i.e. using the proportional circles display mode. But you can also calculate new indicators. For example, if you have integrated the total female population and the female working population, you can define the working rate of women as a new indicator.
click and try !

New indicators are integrated using the "background data" drop-down list, by selecting "define new indicator".
The dialog box that appears allows you to choose a simple percentage (100 * val1 / val2) and a mean evolution rate (100*((val1 / val2) ** (1/n) - 1).
It also displays the selected default colour palette, name of the indicator and units (usually %).
Once these choices are confirmed, the new indicator is available in the background data list, ready to be mapped using a choropleth map.

Up to 5 different foreground data can be integrated in this version of Geoclip. The integrated values must be integers. Your usual spreadsheet will surely allow you to prepare your data to suit your needs. The first column must contain the states FIPS codes. The order of the departments does not matter. Field headers must appear in the first line.

The only limit for adding background data is the number of different calculations possible using the available data. Calculating a rate in Geoclip allows it to be calculated for the whole of USA or for selected states, which would be impossible if the calculation was done earlier on in the spreadsheet.
